" (Willmott 2000) in other words, the reality of death is removed to the edges of culture and society; which means that the significance and reality of death is in effect 'anesthetized' by institutions such as the medicine and science. As Giddens states, death is avoided or excluded from common social life and from "…fundamental existential issues which raise central moral dilemmas for human beings." (Giddens 156)
This suggests that the taboo about death and its avoidance in the cultural discourse is linked to the structure and the composition of modern society and culture. There is a sense that death is seen as the pornography of the modern age. "Helmut Thielicke observed that death is coming to have the same position in modern life and literature that sex had in Victorian times." (the avoidance of death in our modern world)
If we analyze the sociological structure of modern society we can argue that this desire to avoid or sequestrate death in ordinary social discourse is linked to the rise of secularization in modern western society. This is also linked to other cultural phenomenon in the West such as science, materialism and the dominance of the medical profession with regard to death. Death has moved for from its direct experience in the community to the arena of the hospital and medical control; which means that it is something that is dealt with by science. This makes it easier to avoid but more difficult to come to terms with.

The man and his son are so demonstrably complex in this story, even if their survival motives are simple and clear. Particularly, even as they endure a world of cannibalism and tribalism, the two struggle mightily to maintain a sense of moral turpitude, even to the point of impracticality. This is perhaps the most tangibly real element of McCarthy's text, which focuses significant attention to the scorched landscape and its
In stark contrast to Hemmingway's Old Man and the Sea is Kurt Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron which is not only set in the future, but a bleak, tyrannical, almost farcical future. 2081 is not a year in which any sane person would hope to see if Vonnegut's future comes true; it is a dystopian future where everyone if forced to be equal, no matter how ridiculous the attempt to do so.
As one performs their dharma, they earn karma, which is the cause and effect aspect of Hinduism. Karma explains good actions bring good results, and by obeying this principle and dharma, one can experience rebirth into a "better" life that puts one in a stronger position to achieve moksha. Human Qualities of the Theologian The task of the theologian is that of utter responsibility and the necessity of having a connection to his church and the world outside of it.
